Last week, I did a series of Instastories discussing some of the hidden treasures that I keep in my closet and hang on to, no matter how many times I give it a seasonal edit, these items are some that I can't seem to part with.

I asked everyone watching to share with me what they were secretly hanging on to and I got some great responses, which I will get in to later but it made me think about how important our closets are in our lives. Now, don't get me wrong, on the long list of Important Things, I know your closet may not be at the top, but for the purpose of this blog, and perhaps future blogs to come, bare with me.

As I've written before, 2018 is the year I am going to try to love myself more. And while I wake up every day, and tell myself the same certain things, I know that once I shower and step into my closet to get dressed, that really is the start of my day. And I'm lucky right now to be in a place where I don't have to rush out the door so I do have the leisure of time but I know that many or most of you don't.  Fighting with your closet before 7 am is definitely not the right way to start your day. Especially here in Montreal where the weather fluctuates like crazy.

So are you wondering what my secret stash is?? Firstly, and what inspired me to share, are these Marc Jacobs dotted jeans. I love them, but they don't always fit (and sometimes I ask myself if I bought them too small in the first place, but I can't go back in time!!). They aren't exactly a winter item, so every spring, I pull them out and see if I can wiggle into them. They are insanely skinny and a bit of a lower rise than I normally wear but how cute are they?? Polka Dots are making a comeback this spring so hopefully my body will love me as much as I am trying to love it these days!! I'll keep you posted on that.

Speaking of "wiggling into them", let's be honest, there's nothing worse that trying to fit into a pair of jeans that aren't the right size.  And the world isn't perfect and neither are we so let's be kind to ourselves. Don't pine over your jeans that may be too small today.  I've told this story and I will tell it again. I was once working out with a couple of girls and I was going on about how I had this one pair of jeans that I had purchased not to long before and they weren't fitting me. I was getting down about it and one girl said to me, stop worrying about them and go out and get a pair of jeans that fit you today. That stuck with me forever, which is why I hang on to those designer jeans, along with a selection of jeans that fit me in my current state. Invest in a pair that fits you right now, your body, mind and closet will thank you.

I also keep the first "designer bag" I ever purchased. A gold Michael Kors bag. I remember being in Atlanta with my mom, I was pregnant with my second son and we went to this beautiful mall. The bag was on sale and if you know me, you know how much I love gold. I decided right then and there that it was time to "invest". I loved that bag so much, I even ended up buying the matching wallet. So even though I haven't worn it in years, it's somewhat sentimental and I just can't part.

And lastly, a gorgeous bright orangey red pleated long skirt with a slit up the side. Bottom line, it's gorgeous and flowy but where am I going? My suburban mom life doesn't require such an item and it never seems to work when I go out in the summer. I'm saving it for the right moment I think (maybe a trip to Hawaii?) For some reason, that color looks really good on me. I'll try to give it another shot this summer!

After I posted all of this on my Instastories, I asked the viewers what they were hanging on to and I got some great answers. For example, a friend of mine told me she keeps this adorable little plaid skirt she wore in the 90's because she hopes her daughter will wear it one day. And another posted a picture of two, obviously loved, men's shirts and said they were her feathers and she keeps them in a safe place in her closet for comfort.
